Born in Wales, Jonathan grew up in Australia and England, then lived for many years in the Netherlands. Today he is based in Olhão, a fishing town in the Algarve region of Portugal.
After a PhD in the UK and two years as a research sociologist in Amsterdam, he spent over 20 years in advertising and design agencies in Europe, Asia and North America, before making photography his creative focus in 2016.
Specialising in black & white analogue photography, Jonathan shoots primarily medium format 120 film with a variety of vintage cameras from the 1950s, 60s and 80s, and sometimes plastic, pinhole or large format cameras, depending on the project.
He prints his images by hand on silver gelatin paper in the darkroom and selenium tones them for archival permanence.
The passage of time and preservation are recurrent themes in Jonathan’s work and he explores them with various techniques designed to evoke impressions and emotional associations, often using alternative development processes including Lith printing.
